Motivating Change

Posted: April 2, 2011 in Journal Articles

Change is difficult even when it’s the right thing to do.  Our cover article for the March 2011 Mathematics Teacher journal titled Inverse Functions: What Our Teachers Didn’t Tell Us has generated diverse responses such as these:

  • a thoughtful approach on turning inverses inside out
  • I will be changing my emphasis and notation ASAP!
  • I am appalled that they would teach this

Our article challenges a traditional way for teaching inverse functions – the switch x and y approach. We instead advocate for the solve for the dependent variable approach and point out the problems caused by the commonly accepted switch x and y approach.
